Corning Incorporated has officially announced its latest and greatest product, as well as the latest member joining its Gorilla Glass family, the Gorilla Glass 5, delivering a successor to the two years old Gorilla Glass 4 that offers the company's "toughest cover glass yet".
Gorilla Glass 5, which has been designed to provide further protection against breakage from everyday drops, features:
- The ability to survive drops onto rough, unforgiving surfaces up to four times better than competitive glass designs
- The ability to survive up to 80% of the time when dropped face-down from 1.6 meters onto rough surfaces
- "Outstanding" optics for crisper and clearer photos and videos
According to Corning "With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels. Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning’s advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses," The company continued "With many real-world drops occurring from between waist and shoulder height, we knew improving drop performance would be an important and necessary advancement".
Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is now commercially available for OEMs, while the first smartphones equipped with Gorilla Glass 5 are expected to launch later this year.
