Google has updated its Google+ Hangouts app to let you make audio-only calls to your friends and family. While previously you were only able to send a quick message, or start a group video chat.
Starting today you are able to make free voice calls from Hangouts to other Hangouts users, or US/Canada numbers. While international rates are "really low".
According to Google "We know how important it is to keep in touch with friends and family, especially when they’re spread around the world. Hangouts already makes it easy to send a quick message, or start a group video chat. But sometimes it’s best to just call to say 'I love you,' and with the new version of Hangouts you can."
To take advantage of free voice calling from Hangouts, all you have to do is download Hangouts v2.3 and the Accompanying Dialer on Android. While iOS and Web users will get this feature next time they open the app.
